Recently, in a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) violated the 5th Amendment and was thus unconstitutional. DOMA barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages.   With the Court’s recent ruling, however, same sex couples in the 13 states and the District of Columbia where same sex marriages have been legalized, will now be now entitled to certain benefits, to include health, social security and retirement. Attorney Nicole Sodoma was interviewed by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly on the topic,http://nclawyersweekly.com/2013/06/27/reaction-to-the-doma-decision/, to discuss this landmark decision.
